🚨 PARENTS: TOXIC WASTE THREATENS OUR CHILDREN! 🚨
Sunshine Canyon Landfill is set to receive toxic ash and debris from wildfire burn sites—right near our schools and homes!

🚨 TOXIC WASTE THREATENS OUR COMMUNITY! 🚨

Sunshine Canyon Landfill in Los Angeles is set to receive toxic ash and debris from wildfire burn sites. This unacceptable plan puts our health, air quality, and water supply at risk. We need your help NOW to stop this!

🔥 What’s at stake?

✅ Air Quality & Health – Toxic particles from the landfill will be carried by wind, impacting thousands of residents, including children who are most vulnerable to pollutants like carcinogens and heavy metals.
✅ Water Safety – The landfill is less than a mile from the LA Aqueduct Cascades and Van Norman Reservoir, which supply water to 1/3 of Los Angeles. Toxic contamination could jeopardize our water supply!
✅ Sunshine Canyon's Failure – The landfill has a history of over 17,000 complaints for odor and pollution issues, with 376 violations issued to its operator, Republic Services. It cannot handle even basic waste management, let alone hazardous materials!
✅ Environmental Justice – Allowing Sunshine Canyon to self-regulate hazardous waste undermines public trust and exposes communities to additional environmental harm.

Sunshine Canyon already has a history of failure:
❌ Over 17,146 odor & pollution complaints filed with the
South Coast Air Quality Management District.
❌ 376 violations issued to Republic Services, the landfill’s operator.

❌ Now, the state wants to trust them to self-regulate toxic waste?!

These substances, found in building fire debris, pose severe health and environmental risks. Many are classified as Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, Reprotoxic, or Persistent Bioaccumulative and Toxic (PBT) substances.

Heavy metals and toxic elements like lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury can leach into groundwater, contaminate soil, and cause long-term health impacts, including neurological damage and cancer.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, toluene, styrene, and formaldehyde are linked to respiratory issues, organ damage, and increased cancer risk.

Persistent pollutants like dioxins, furans, and PCBs do not break down easily and bioaccumulate in the environment, posing long-term toxicity risks to humans and wildlife.

Hazardous materials such as asbestos, flame retardants, and PFAS chemicals are known for their severe health effects, including endocrine disruption, immune suppression, and developmental harm.

Dumping fire debris containing these dangerous substances into Sunshine Canyon Landfill—a site not designed for handling such hazardous materials—creates a serious risk of toxic exposure through air, water, and soil contamination. This endangers nearby communities, workers, and ecosystems while violating fundamental public health and environmental protections.

Proper hazardous waste management and disposal practices must be followed to prevent long-term harm. Allowing this toxic mix into a landfill not equipped for hazardous waste is irresponsible, dangerous, and unacceptable.
